Catalytic Converters Fail for a Reason
Catalytic converters are susceptible to failure for a number of reasons, and rarely do they fail on their own. In most cases, the catalytic converter will last for the entire life cycle of a vehicle...but you can not always count on that. The catalytic converter can slowly begin to fail over time as the catalyst elements wear out. One of the major causes for catalytic converter failure has to do with malfunctioning Oxygen Sensors, or because of carbon buildup. High mileage could be another culprit, as well as an improperly operating engine.
Catalytic converter problems could also be something more serious, like heavily worn piston rings or jumped timing chain. These problems allow fuel or air into the wrong place at the wrong time. A head gasket or intake manifold leak can also cause issues. Oil or coolant can coat the catalyst and set off that pesky check engine light.
Even though a vehicle may seem to be running fine, a damaged converter is normally the product of another malfunctioning part. Before you replace your catalytic converter, be sure the other components within your vehicle's emission system are checked and working properly.
Keep in mind that your catalytic converter could fail again if an underlying issue goes unfixed.
The following is a list of the most common parts that can lead to converter failure:
Common Parts Leading to Converter Failure
- Oxygen Sensor
- Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor (ECT)
- Throttle Position Sensor (TPS)
- EGR Valve
- EGR Valve Position Sensor (EVP)
- Air Charge Temperature (ACT) Sensor
- Ported Vacuum Switch (PVS) Sensor
- Vacuum Hoses
- Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) Sensor
- Barometric Absolute Pressure Sensor
- Idle Speed Control Motor
- Idle Air Control (IAC) Valve
- Air Pump Check Valve
- Air Injection Tubes
- Throttle Body Injector (TBI)
- Fuel Injectors
- Mixture Control Solenoid
- Canister Purge Valve
- Spark Plug Wires
- Air Filter
- Exhaust Leaks
