At Hurricane Automotive, we strongly recommend you have a professional exhaust technician install your converter. However, if you are an ambitious Do-It-Yourselfer, catalytic converter replacement can be done from home.
With some patience and the correct tools/equipment, installing a catalytic converter should only take a few hours. Before you attempt to install a catalytic converter on your own, be sure that you know the rules and regulations regarding catalytic converter installation in your state.
Once you are familiar with the rules and regulations governing your state, it’s time to install your catalytic converter. Luckily, most catalytic converter installation is fairly straightforward.
Tips for Catalytic Converter Installation
Make sure your vehicle's engine is OFF, and the engine and exhaust has had time to completely cool.
When replacing the catalytic converter on your vehicle, make sure that there is no loose debris on or around the converter.
Before beginning any work, compare your old catalytic converter to the replacement catalytic converter. Are they the same?
Never reuse old hardware. When replacing or installing a new catalytic converter, you should only use new hardware, and ensure that all of the gaskets are replaced.
Testing Your Catalytic Converter
Once you’ve successfully installed the new catalytic converter, test everything. Start your vehicle, and allow it to idle for a few minutes. While the vehicle is idling, listen for any leaks or unusual noises as it may alert you to improper installation or other issues.
Do not touch any part of the exhaust while your vehicle is running. Be sure to let it cool.
Leaks are usually caused by loose bolts. If you detect any leaks, simply turn off your engine and let it cool. Once your engine has cooled off, re-tighten the bolts.
Follow the Catalytic Converter Installation Instructions
Finally, always be sure to follow your catalytic converter installation instructions exactly. Above, we’ve provided some basic information and tips for installation. However, the actual installation process may vary slightly depending on the specific make and model of your vehicle and the type of catalytic converter you install.
Again, we strongly encourage you to consult with your local automotive exhaust professionals.
