Potential Catalytic Converter Issues

Catalytic converters, located in the exhaust system between the engine and the muffler, use ceramic-coded beads and precious metals, the catalysts, to convert pollutants such as unburned gas and nitrogen oxide into harmless gases.

Potential Issues

Catalytic converters can last for over 10 years but may become contaminated, clogged, overheated, or physically damaged. This may lead to slow engine performance and potentially even engine shutdown. Leaded gas, although rarely found in the United States, can destroy a catalyst. Engine coolant can leak into the combustion system because of a faulty cylinder head gasket. Engine oil is another culprit. These fluids can clog a catalytic converter and restrict exhaust gases from passing through. If exhaust flow is restricted, less air can get into the engine and performance will suffer. Catalytic converters also run the risk of overheating due to excessive amounts of unburned gas caused by a misfiring spark plug, a failed oxygen sensor, or a leaky exhaust valve.

Another issue with catalytic converters is that the precious metals inside of them attract thieves. They have small amounts of platinum, rhodium, and palladium, which have value for metal dealers.

Catalytic Converter Maintenance

Some symptoms of a bad catalytic converter include sluggish engine performance, reduced acceleration, dark exhaust smoke, a sulfur smell, and excessive heat under the vehicle. Some of these symptoms, however, can be caused by other parts of the emissions system, so always get a mechanic to diagnose when it is time to replace your catalytic converter.
