Since 1975, the purpose of catalytic converters was to convert or reduce the amount of harmful pollutants produced by a vehicle. Catalytic converers are filled with a catalyst made up of precious metals, which react with harmful exhaust gases. This reaction converts these harmful gases into water before leaving the vehicle's exhaust system.
