Pre-Catalytic Converters: What Are They?
Pre Catalytic converters, sometimes referred to as pre-cats, are located in front of the main catalytic converter. The main role of the pre-catalytic converter is to improve the efficiency of the main catalytic converter.
Why is this?
The main catalytic converter in a vehicle works best at converting the harmful compounds within the exhaust gas at high temperatures. However, because the engine takes time to warm up, there is a brief period of time in which harmful emissions are allowed to pass directly through the catalytic converter into the air.
Pre-catalytic converters work to prevent some of the gas emissions before the emissions enter into the main catalytic converter. This also prevents potential damage to the main catalytic converter.
Common Symptoms of Pre-Catalytic Converter Failure
It is important to recognize the signs of pre-catalytic converter failure so that you can take action to order and/or replace your pre-catalytic converter before it is too late. The following are some symptoms to look for:
- Extreme Oil Loss
- Noticeable Lack of Engine Power
- Unusual/Strange Noises Stemming from Engine
