Troubleshooting Your Catalytic Converter

Catalytic converters from Hurricane Automotive are typically good for the entire life of your vehicle, but occasionally it can fail. If you suspect that your catalytic converter is failing, the best thing you can do is take it to a service facility.

Technicians will place your vehicle on an electric diagnostic machine to locate the source of the problem. They will possibly remove the oxygen sensor from the exhaust pipe ahead of the catalytic converter. They will then replace the catalytic converter, if necessary. Remember, it is against the law in many states to remove a catalytic converter and run a vehicle without one.

Here are five signs that something may be wrong with your catalytic converter:

  1. Drop in fuel efficiency in your vehicle

  2. Your vehicle no longer accelerates when you hit the gas

  3. Vehicle refuses to start

  4. Vehicle fails emissions test

  5. MIL or Check Engine Light comes on

The most common cause of catalytic converter failure in an older car is that it becomes overly clogged and exhaust gases can not get through the muffler and out of the car. Catalytic converters are also sensitive to changes in the contents and temperature of exhaust gases, allowing oil or coolant to get into the combustion chamber and be burned. Always go in for tune-ups at specified intervals to ensure that everything is working properly.
