A car’s exhaust system works to filter out the chemicals that are produced from the gas running through your car’s engine. Harsh chemicals such as carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides would fill the car’s cabin if it was not for the exhaust system. Besides reducing the amount of chemicals released, your exhaust can also control the torque and noise your car makes. Depending on the driver, you may want your car to be louder or quieter. To get the sound you want, changing your exhaust may be the answer. Many people aren’t aware that they can change their own exhaust system and it may be easier than you think. Your car already has an exhaust system in place, so you just need to replace the old with the new.
When changing the exhaust in your car you will need a large workspace. You are going to lift your vehicle in order to get under and work. If you do not have a car lift you can jack it up and secure it with heavy-duty jack stands. It is important to safely secure your vehicle before getting under it.
Once you are ready to get started, the first thing you will need to do is disconnect your current exhaust from the catalytic converter. Find the clamp that is securing the exhaust and undo it. If you can not find the clamp you may need to cut the pipe right past the converter.
After the exhaust has been disconnected from the converter, move your way back and find the hooks supporting it. Once you have found the hooks you can unhook the exhaust and pull it out.
Before putting the new exhaust on your car, make sure everything is assembled properly according to the manufacturer. Tighten the clamps on the new exhaust, but not all the way.
Place the new exhaust where the old one was and line the clamps up with the existing brackets on the catalytic converter. Once the hooks and brackets are lined up they should connect automatically.
Once everything feels secure in place you can tighten the clamps. Lower your car off the jack. Once the car is back on the ground safely you can start your car and look for any leaks. If no leaks are occurring, you are good to go!
It is important that your exhaust is tight in place. Over time it can come loose and you will hear a rattling noise as the car runs. If this occurs you’ll want to get back under and tighten the clamps.
