Which Catalytic Converter Is Right For My Vehicle?

Every car has a catalytic converter and its job is to convert the vehicle’s exhaust emissions into a cleaner substance before exiting through the tailpipe. Using metals such as platinum, palladium and rhodium, chemical reactions occur to eliminate nitrogen oxide, carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons. When problems arise with your catalytic converter you will see your check engine light turn on, an unusual smell when your drive, a rattling noise and your engine will not have as much power. This means you will need a replacement, so how do you find the right one for your vehicle?

Take a Look at Your Emissions System

Pop the hood and find your emissions sticker to correctly identify what kind of system you have. Your emissions will either meet Environment Protection Agency (EPA) standards or the California Air Resources Board (CARB) standards. In 1967, CARB was created to deal with the smog problem in Los Angeles. Since then many states other than California have adopted this law. Each state chooses which standards they wish to follow, so you must check with your state’s DMV to figure out which standard your catalytic converter must follow.

Direct Fit vs. Universal Fit

Once you have figured out which standard your catalytic converter must follow, you can now choose which fit you would like. A direct fit will match the factory converter that was installed in your car from the factory. This means the converter can be bolted directly into place without needing any welding. They are easy to install but there are only available on a select number of vehicles. Using Hurricane Automovtive’s website, you can check the availability by inputting your vehicle’s make, model and year. If it is unavailable, a universal fit is available. All you need to do is measure your current exhaust system, and some welding may be required to secure it in place. The great thing about universal converters is that they usually come at a smaller price tag.
